My (covid-19) travel insurances with great value for money + premium alternative [Backpacking worldwide+Holidays+ Working Holiday Australia].
Don’t buy travel insurance! Buy peace of mind!
Hello guys! Since I am always looking for cheap and good travel insurances myself, I am putting together the best, most flexible and cheapest ones international travel insurances for you in this post! I myself have tried three of them (see picture) and will show you later which one I use today (Stand April 2021).
For Australia’s working holidaymakers: What you should know about travel insurances before your working holiday
A proper travel insurance for your working holiday/working travel in Australia is obligatory and part of the application process.
Click here to see all requirements for your working holiday/working travel in Australia
It is important to get the travel insurance before the trip until the end of the trip (i.e. for one year). In this way you can also save some money, as longer contracts results in a better price!
Theoretically they could otherwise deny you entry to Australia. This will probably never happen for German and other citizens, because you should be able to show an amount of 5000$ (Australian Dollars) for a working holiday visa for Australia anyway. More for the Working Holiday Visa requirements here.
Furthermore, some nationalities are not entitled to the so-called medicare during their working holiday. Medicare is the equivalent of your countries “normal” health insurance and it’s free/discounted for certain nationalities. However it doesn’t mean that you don’t need an travel insurance unfortunately ;). Once in Australia you can “enrol” and get started with medicare Australia.
For those who won’t use it you can declare that in your tax return in the end of your stay so that it won’t be calculated. More about tax return here.
Countries entitled for Medicare are:
UK, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland, New Zealand for the whole stay and Italy and Malta for 6 months after arrival in Australia.
Travel insurances for worldwide travel
For simple worldwide travel you theoretically don’t need any insurance. But you should not risk it for a long time. It is also not expensive 😉
Furthermore, international or (foreign) travel insurance should not be confused with international health insurance. With the latter, much more is covered and therefore much more expensive.
International travel insurance usually only covers emergencies (accidental, sudden accidents and illness. That means no (pre-)illnesses and routine examinations such as blood tests, dentist, etc.
You can find good international travel health insurances in the separate post here (coming soon! or just type in the search bar)
Bonus Tip [just relevant for German citizens]:
For the older among you (from 27 your are no longer family insured) it pays off to take out a normal health insurance until you are back in Germany. Thus one saves very much money. Of course not everybody can do this, depending on the previous course of illness. More about this here (coming soon).
How? Just send an email with a confirmation of your departure to the local residents’ registration office + your new international travel insurance + flight ticket. By the way, you are now free to withdraw from of all your contracts, because you have an extraordinary right of cancellation (for cancellation or shutdown for e.g. running gym contracts, cell phone contracts)
I myself am stateless and therefore only pay my travel insurance if at all 😉
If you want more information or questions about statelessness and its advantages and disadvantages, please mention it in the comments below. Otherwise it would go beyond the scope of this article.
Most common diseases abroad I personally experienced myself or from other travelers!
Hey guys,
I will show you the very common diseases and accidents you can get while backpacking and traveling abroad, where you definitely wish you would have bought a travel insurance!
- Infection due to unclean environment for example throat infection or infection through food poisonings. Usually due to street food and water.
- Scooter or Motorbike accidents! Very very common!
- Sport injuries especially football, surfing and climbing (if broken operation needed)
- Covid-19 virus! (eventually hospitalization needed)
- Dengue virus! (not curable and eventually hospitalization needed) and similar like malaria (curable). Covid-19 is a joke against dengue!
