My top travel insurance with great value for money and premium alternative

Don’t buy travel insurance! Buy peace of mind!

Hello guys! Since I am constantly looking for cheap and good travel insurance myself, I am putting together the best, most flexible, and cheapest international travel insurance for you in this post!

I have tried three of them and will show you later which one I use today (Stand February 2026).

Travel insurance for worldwide travel

For worldwide travel, you theoretically don’t need any insurance. But  you should not risk it for a long time. It is also not expensive 😉

Furthermore, international or (foreign) travel insurance should not be confused with international health insurance. With the latter, much more is covered and therefore much more expensive.

International travel insurance usually only covers emergencies (accidental, sudden accidents and illnesses). That means no (pre-)illnesses and routine examinations such as blood tests, dentist visits, etc.

Case working holiday Australia: What you should know about travel insurance before your working holiday

Proper travel insurance for your working holiday/working travel in Australia is obligatory and part of the application process.

It is important to get the travel insurance before the trip until the end of the trip (i.e., for one year). In this way you can also save some money, as longer contracts result in a better price!

Theoretically, they could otherwise deny you entry to Australia. This will probably never happen for German and other citizens, because you should be able to show an amount of $5000 (Australian dollars) for a working holiday visa for Australia anyway. More for the Working Holiday Visa requirements here.

Furthermore, some nationalities are not entitled to the so-called Medicare during their working holiday.

Medicare is the equivalent of your country’s “normal” health insurance, and it’s free/discounted for certain nationalities. However, it doesn’t mean that you don’t need travel insurance, unfortunately ;).

Once in Australia, you can “enroll” and get started with Medicare Australia.

For those who won’t use it, you can declare that in your tax return at the end of your stay so that it won’t be calculated. More about tax return here.

Countries entitled to Medicare are:

UK, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland, and New Zealand for the whole stay and Italy and Malta for 6 months after arrival in Australia.

Most common diseases abroad I experienced myself or from other travelers!

I will show you the very common diseases and accidents you can get while backpacking and traveling abroad, where you definitely wish you would have bought travel insurance!

  • Infection due to an unclean environment, for example, throat infection or infection through food poisoning. Usually due to street food and water.
  • Scooter or motorbike accidents! Very, very common!
  • Sport injuries, especially in football, surfing, and climbing (if broken operation needed)
  • COVID-19 virus! (eventually hospitalization needed)
  • Dengue virus! (not curable and eventually hospitalization needed) and similar to malaria (curable). COVID-19 is a joke compared to dengue!
  • Any other pre-condition you have combined with a new disease can be very dangerous! For example, high blood pressure, obesity, and other conditions in combination with COVID-19 could be dangerous!

Bonus Tip [just relevant for German citizens]:

For the older among you (from 27 on, you are no longer family insured), it pays off to take out normal health insurance until you are back in Germany. Thus, one saves very much money. Of course not everybody can do this, depending on the previous course of illness. More about this here (coming soon).

How? Just send an email with a confirmation of your departure to the residents’ registration office + your new international travel insurance + flight ticket.

By the way, you are now free to withdraw from all your contracts because you have an extraordinary right of cancellation (for cancellation or shutdown, e.g., running gym contracts, cell phone contracts)

I am stateless and therefore only pay my travel insurance if at all 😉

If you want additional information or have questions about statelessness and its advantages and disadvantages, please mention it in the comments below. Otherwise it would go beyond the scope of this article.
