Best Travel Insurance For Working Holiday Australia 2026: My Top Choices

I’ve been travelling for over 14 years across 45+ countries. Dengue fever in Bali, food poisoning in Mexico, a scooter accident in Southeast Asia, mugged and drugged in Medellín. Every single time, travel insurance saved me hundreds of dollars or covered what was stolen. Without it, several of those situations would have wiped out weeks of working holiday savings in a single afternoon.

That’s not a scare tactic. That’s just what long-term travel looks like.

Is travel insurance mandatory for a working holiday visa in Australia?

Not technically. Border staff almost never check for it. But it functions like one in practice: visa applicants need to show AUD $5,000 in funds anyway, and most nationalities have no Medicare reciprocal agreement with Australia. That means a single hospital visit comes entirely out of your own pocket.

If you’re planning a working holiday in Australia, sorting travel insurance is one of the first things on your list, not an afterthought. A standard GP visit runs AUD $80 to $120. An ambulance call-out alone can hit four figures. None of that gets covered by your home country’s healthcare system once you’re on a 417 or 462 visa.

The good news: working holiday insurance for Australia starts from around $62 USD per 4 weeks, and many plans can be purchased after you’ve already left home. Still, sort it before you fly if you can.

In this guide I compare three solid options for working holiday makers, backpackers, and digital nomads in 2026: SafetyWing, Heymondo, and World Nomads. I’ve personally used the first two on real claims. Read on to find what fits your travel style and budget.

What Travel Insurance Actually Covers (And What It Doesn’t)

Before diving into the providers, this is the thing most first-timers get wrong. Travel health insurance is for emergencies only. It is not a replacement for full health insurance. If you have chronic conditions or need routine care, you’ll need something more expensive, closer to statutory health insurance levels.

Typical examples NOT covered by standard travel health insurance:

  • Medications without seeing an emergency doctor first
  • Routine check-ups (dermatologist, urologist, gynecologist, dentist cleaning)
  • Blood tests for thyroid or other monitoring purposes
  • Pre-existing conditions
  • Cancer treatment (on basic plans)

What IS covered on a good standard plan:

  • Emergency medical treatment and hospital stays
  • Doctor visits for new, unexpected illness (flu, malaria, covid-19, mystery fever)
  • Emergency dental (broken teeth, sudden pain, not cleanings)
  • Theft and robbery (with the right plan or add-on)
  • Travel delays and trip interruptions
  • Medical evacuation
  • Repatriation in the event of death

The value for money calculation is simple: one serious injury in Australia without cover can cost more than a full year of premiums. A sprained ankle in Sydney? Easily AUD $300-500 before you’ve left the waiting room.

Adventure and Safety Hand in Hand: My Illnesses and Accidents

We all hope our travels will go smoothly. But life is unpredictable, and especially on adventures, unexpected situations can arise.

Traveling means discovering new worlds, getting to know different cultures, and pushing personal boundaries to their limits. During this, accidents or sudden illnesses can occur. Here are some of my illness cases and accidents over 14 years of traveling:

  • Almost a panic attack in a crowded metro in Jakarta (Indonesia). Specifically, no one could get in or out, with pushing and shoving in a 35-degree (Celsius) and high humidity environment
  • Severe food poisoning (lasting several weeks), experienced in Mexico and Peru—just to name a few countries.
  • Had a famous pandemic in Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, and who knows where else?
  • Had to buy a lot of expensive medications after visiting the doctor, which I would have had to pay for myself without travel health insurance (easily hundreds of euros).
  • Multiple times high fever without knowing the cause—all over the world.
  • Phone stolen numerous times in Mexico and Colombia (new phones too).
  • Numerous injuries from scooter accidents in Southeast Asia (SEA).
  • Mugged and drugged in Colombia (Medellin).
  • Injuries from playing football (soccer) in Mexico.
  • Laptop stolen in Mexico.
  • Dengue fever in Bali
  • The list goes on…

Ask yourself, what are you prone to get during your travels

Alright, that was just me, but what about you? Look in the past and analyze what had happened to you + new experiences in your travel (future).

Imagine surfing in Australia, hiking through the Andes, or exploring the streets of Bangkok and suddenly needing medical help.

Good travel health insurance ensures that the costs are covered in case of an emergency, allowing you to focus fully on your adventure without worrying about high medical costs.

So always secure comprehensive health insurance before your trip and enjoy your adventure without worries! This way, you are well-prepared and can make the most of your travels.

What You Need to Know About Medicare in Australia

Most nationalities on a working holiday visa are not entitled to Medicare, Australia’s public healthcare system. Medicare is only available to citizens, permanent residents, and nationals from countries with a reciprocal healthcare agreement (UK, New Zealand, Italy, Sweden, Netherlands, Belgium, Finland, Norway, Slovenia, Malta, Republic of Ireland).

If your country is not on that list, every single medical cost is out of pocket. This is the core reason travel insurance for working holiday Australia is non-negotiable.

You can also declare your Medicare status in your Australian tax return to avoid being incorrectly charged the Medicare Levy Surcharge. More on that in my tax return guide.

Pro Tip for German Citizens

This section is for German citizens only. Check separately for your country. A similar approach also works in France.

If you’re over 23 and no longer covered by family insurance, consider putting your statutory health insurance (AOK, Barmer, DAK, etc.) on hold while you’re abroad. De-register at your local Bürgeramt, get the de-registration certificate, and send it with your travel insurance proof and flight ticket to your statutory insurer.

The de-registration also gives you extraordinary termination rights, which lets you cancel gym memberships, phone contracts, and other ongoing subscriptions you’d otherwise be stuck paying while abroad.

I’m stateless myself, so I only pay for travel insurance. If you have questions about that lifestyle, drop them in the comments.

What I Look for in a Working Holiday Insurance Plan

Here’s my personal checklist, and every plan in this guide meets these criteria:

  • Open choice of doctors (private and specialists, not just public hospitals). Tip: go private when possible, especially in emergencies.
  • No deductible, so minor claims are actually worth making
  • Fast, simple claims process without chasing people for weeks
  • Emergency medical evacuation and repatriation
  • Adventure sports coverage (essential in Australia)
  • Electronics theft protection (essential in hostels)
  • Can be purchased after departure
  • Monthly cancellation (no locked-in contracts, except World Nomads which is trip-based)
  • Value for money, not cheapest, but genuinely useful when you need it

1. SafetyWing Nomad Medical Insurance

Best for: experienced travelers and digital nomads on a budget

SafetyWing branded illustration of a traveler holding a passport in front of a futuristic dome structure
SafetyWing, insurance built for nomads, by nomads.

All benefits at a glance:

  • Cost: $62.72/28 days (ages 18-39). Last updated March 2026.
  • No deductible — finally abolished, meaning you can claim from as little as $1
  • Buy before departure or anytime during your trip
  • Monthly, cancel at any time. Automatic renewal
  • Valid in your home country for up to 30 days
  • Short-term stays covered from 5 days
  • Upgrade to full international health insurance available

The removal of the $250 deductible was a genuine game-changer for working holiday makers. From personal experience, most minor injuries in Australia (spider bites, workplace cuts, minor strains on a construction site) cost between $50 and $150. Before the change, none of that was claimable. Now it all is.

What SafetyWing Covers and What It Doesn’t

✅ Covered:

  • Emergency medical treatment, hospital stays and surgery — the core of the plan. Illness, injury, accidents, all covered up to $250,000 USD
  • Doctor visits for new unexpected illness — flu, covid-19, malaria, fever of unknown origin, mystery infections. If it’s new and unexpected, it’s in
  • Chiropractor, physio and specialist visits — limited sessions, but covered. A reader had over $800 AUD in chiro and X-ray costs covered after a gym injury
  • Emergency dental — sudden tooth pain or a broken tooth from a sports accident. Not routine cleaning or cosmetic work
  • Lost or delayed luggage — reimbursed up to set limits per item and per plan
  • Travel delays and trip interruptions — unplanned overnight stays, costs from covered delays
  • Medical evacuation — transport to a better-equipped hospital if needed, up to $100,000 lifetime
  • Home country coverage — up to 30 days covered if you return home during your trip
  • Motor accidents — covered if properly licensed, wearing safety gear and not intoxicated

❌ Not covered (base plan):

  • Pre-existing conditions — anything diagnosed or treated before your policy started
  • Routine check-ups and preventative care — GP visits just to check in, dermatologist, gynaecologist, blood tests for monitoring
  • Cancer treatment — not included on the Essential plan
  • Maternity care
  • Electronics theft and adventure sports — only with paid add-ons ($10 each per 28 days)
  • US travel — requires separate add-on at $46.16/28 days

Add-ons worth considering: US coverage adventure sports, electronic theft!

SafetyWing Nomad Insurance price calculator showing $82.72 total cost per 4 weeks with adventure sports and electronics theft add-ons included

As you can see, SafetyWing keeps it flexible. You pick your base plan and bolt on what you actually need.

Adventure Sports: +$10/28 days. Covers a wide range of activities including surfing, scuba diving, paragliding, rugby, motorbiking, skydiving, whitewater rafting and 30+ more. Coverage up to $100,000. If you’re planning any of those activities in Australia (and you probably are), this add-on is worth it.

Electronics Theft: +$10/28 days. Covers laptops, phones, cameras and other devices against theft and robbery. As a backpacker staying in hostels, I would always add this. Keep photos and receipts of serial numbers for all items you want covered.

US coverage: +$46.16/28 days. Not relevant for your Australian working holiday, but worth knowing if you plan to pass through the US before or after.

With both adventure sports and electronics theft: $82.72/28 days total.

  • Trip cancellation and interruption — if your plans fall apart for a covered reason, costs are reimbursed
  • Flight delays and missed connections — compensation for unplanned overnight stays and related expenses
  • Lost, stolen or damaged luggage — covered up to plan limits
  • Electronics theft — included in premium plans, no separate add-on needed
  • Adventure sports — included as standard, no add-on needed
  • Medical evacuation and repatriation

  • Routine check-ups and preventative care — GP visits, blood tests for monitoring, dermatologist, gynaecologist
  • Routine dental — cleaning, cosmetic work, ongoing dental treatment
  • Cancer treatment — not included on standard plans
  • Maternity care

Heymondo is the fuller package. You pay more, but you get more. The WhatsApp doctor access is genuinely useful when you’re sick at 2am in a hostel in Cairns and you’re not sure if it’s worth going to a hospital. The app makes claims straightforward, no paperwork trails.

3. World Nomads

Best for: adventure-heavy travelers and those doing physically demanding work

World Nomads travel insurance homepage for backpackers, digital nomads, and adventure travelers
World Nomads offers flexible travel insurance for backpackers, digital nomads, and adventure travelers visiting Australia and other destinations.

World Nomads is the third option worth knowing about, particularly if adventure activities are a major part of your working holiday or you’re from a country where SafetyWing has limited availability.

All benefits at a glance:

  • Cost: From approximately $100 USD/month depending on age and nationality
  • 150+ adventure sports covered by default (no add-on required)
  • Two plans: Standard and Explorer
  • Non-medical cover included: trip cancellation, travel delays, luggage
  • Buy before or during your trip
  • 24/7 emergency assistance
  • Valid in 150+ countries

Standard vs Explorer

  Standard Explorer
Medical limit $100,000 USD $250,000 USD
Adventure sports 150+ activities 150+ activities + higher risk
Gear and equipment Lower limits Higher limits
Trip cancellation Included Included, higher limits
Best for General WHV travel High-risk or extended adventure travel

What World Nomads Covers and What It Doesn’t

✅ Covered:

  • Doctor visits for new unexpected illness — flu, covid-19, malaria, fever, unexpected infections covered from day one
  • Emergency dental — sudden pain, broken teeth, dental accidents. Not routine cleaning or ongoing treatment
  • 150+ adventure sports by default — surfing, scuba diving, skiing, bungee jumping, skydiving, mountain biking and more. No add-on required, it’s built in
  • Gear and equipment cover — cameras, laptops, sports equipment up to plan limits. Explorer plan has higher limits

  • Routine check-ups and preventative care — GP visits for monitoring, blood tests, dermatologist, gynaecologist
  • Routine dental — cleaning, cosmetic work, ongoing treatment
  • Maternity care
  • Unlimited trip duration — World Nomads is trip-based, not a rolling monthly subscription. If your working holiday runs longer than planned you need to extend or repurchase. This is the key structural difference from SafetyWing
  • Australian and New Zealand residents traveling within Australia — domestic travel in your home country is excluded

The key difference from SafetyWing: World Nomads works on a trip basis, not a subscription. This makes it better suited to people with a defined start and end date, rather than indefinite long-term travelers who want to roll month to month and cancel anytime.

Worth knowing for Australians and New Zealanders: SafetyWing does not cover Australian or New Zealand citizens regardless of where they’re traveling. If you’re from Australia or NZ, World Nomads or Heymondo are your primary options.

Final Verdict: Which Working Holiday Insurance Is Right for You

First time traveling long-term or doing your first working holiday?
Go with Heymondo. Higher coverage limits, WhatsApp doctor access, a proper app, and it covers non-medical emergencies like lost luggage and flight delays. More support when you need it most.

Experienced traveler or digital nomad who knows the drill?
Go with SafetyWing. Cheapest monthly cost, roll-and-cancel flexibility, and the removal of the deductible now makes it worth claiming for smaller incidents like a spider bite or a minor workplace injury on a construction site in Sydney.

Planning serious adventure travel or coming from Australia or New Zealand?
Go with World Nomads. 150+ adventure sports covered by default, trip cancellation included, and it’s available to nationalities that SafetyWing excludes. If you’ve got a fixed trip period rather than open-ended plans, World Nomads is cleaner.

What none of them cover: pre-existing conditions, routine care, or chronic illness management. If that applies to you, you need full international health insurance, which costs more but covers everything.

One thing all three plans have in common: they are all infinitely better than nothing. One hospital visit in Australia without cover can cost more than your entire working holiday budget.

Get covered before you fly:

  • SafetyWing Nomad Insurance — best value for money for experienced long-term travelers
  • Heymondo — best all-inclusive package for first-timers (5% off with my link)
  • World Nomads — best for adventure-heavy trips and AU/NZ citizens

Frequently Asked Questions

Is travel insurance mandatory for a working holiday visa in Australia?

Technically no. Border staff rarely check for it and it is not a formal visa requirement. But most nationalities have no Medicare agreement with Australia, meaning all medical costs fall on you personally. A single hospital visit without cover can wipe out weeks of savings. See all working holiday visa requirements here.

Can I buy travel insurance after I’ve already left home?

Yes. SafetyWing, Heymondo and World Nomads can all be purchased after departure. That said, sort it before you fly if you can. Incidents that occur before your policy starts will not be covered.

Does travel insurance cover working holiday jobs in Australia?

Basic plans cover medical emergencies including workplace injuries. For higher-risk casual jobs like construction or farming, check your plan covers manual labor and consider adding the adventure sports upgrade with SafetyWing, or choose World Nomads which includes it by default.

Which is better for working holiday Australia: SafetyWing, Heymondo, or World Nomads?

For first-time working holiday makers: Heymondo. For budget-conscious experienced travelers: SafetyWing. For adventure-heavy itineraries or Australian and New Zealand citizens: World Nomads. All three cover Australia and all three are legitimate, working plans, not just brochure insurance.

Does travel insurance cover theft and robbery in Australia?

Only with the right plan or add-on. With SafetyWing, electronics theft costs an additional $10 per 28 days. Heymondo includes theft protection in premium plans. World Nomads covers gear and luggage theft as standard. Given how common phone and laptop theft is in hostels across Sydney and Melbourne, do not skip this.

Can I use travel insurance to avoid the Medicare Levy Surcharge in Australia?

Partially. You can declare your Medicare status in your Australian tax return to avoid being charged the Medicare Levy Surcharge if your country has no Medicare agreement with Australia. Travel insurance and the tax return are separate processes. See my tax return guide for details.

Does travel insurance cover covid-19, flu, and malaria in Australia?

Yes. All three plans cover treatment for covid-19, flu, malaria, and other unexpected illnesses as standard on their base plans, as long as the condition was not pre-existing before your policy started.

Is World Nomads available for Australian and New Zealand citizens?

Yes. World Nomads and Heymondo are both available to Australian and New Zealand citizens. SafetyWing is not.
