Everything you need to know on how to claim your Super after your working holiday in Australia

What is Superannuation also called Super in short?

It’s an amount your employer pays you every time you work for him on a TFN basis. After you surpass $450 for the same employer per month, he is obligated to pay you Super. By percentage, your employer pays you at least 11.5% Super of your earned salary on that specific day.

Meanwhile, in 2026 it should be at least 12 % Super paid by your employer.

So it can be a huge amount! Mine was around $2000 AUD when I did my SUPER release!

Will my Super amount get taxed?

Yes, your Super get taxed 65% of the total amount you accumulated during your working holiday!

It sucks, but don’t worry! It still will be a significant amount at the end of your working holiday.

Steps to claim your Super

The way to get your SUPER is through your myGov account. After logging in https://my.gov.au/mygov, just connect it to the ato (Australian Taxation Office) services.

It should look like the screenshot below. Furthermore, I would connect all SUPER accounts first.

If you do have more than one, bring up the final super amount you see in your accounts.

By the way, the process for claiming taxes is very similar. You also need to connect to ato to make it easy.

Remember? You got to know ato already, when you applied for your TFN!

Connect here to "ato"

Again, make sure to take out everything you see in your SUPER account (I had Cbus Super; yours might be with your Australian bank or any other provider like Sunsuper, etc., or you might have several Super accounts) and put it in your release application!

One more time: To take full advantage, make sure you know your full super amount first and put that amount in the application!

If you don’t know what the heck I’m referring to or need some help, just comment down below or PM!

Find "Super" on the top. For your SUPER release do not put this number you see here, but the number you see on your actual SUPER account e. g. Cbus, Sunsuper, Westpac Super etc.!!

Check here your SUPER accounts after clicking SUPER on the menu bar on the top and connect them, after that click "release" on the top right

Final Thoughts on Claiming Your Super After Australia

Getting your superannuation back after your working holiday in Australia isn’t complicated, but it does require a bit of attention. Take the time to log into myGov, connect the ATO, and make sure all your super accounts are linked before you submit your DASP claim. Missing even one fund means leaving money behind.

Yes, the tax hit is brutal, but this is still cash you earned. For most working holiday makers, it ends up being a few hundred or even a few thousand dollars, which is far better in your pocket than forgotten in Australia.

Do it once, do it properly, and close this chapter cleanly before moving on to your next adventure.
