What a good travel insurance must have

Want to know a secret: Public hospital visits and medical treatment all around the most popular destinations for backpackers and digital nomads are free (most countries in Latin America) or at least not cost intensive (most countries in South-East Asia) or may have a mutual medical treatment agreement (like Australia with some countries). Therefore, why bother getting proper travel insurance?

Because “free”, it’s almost always the most basic treatment you will get, and in my personal experience from more than 10 years included oftentimes:

  • Hygiene levels are similar to those found in public toilets. (guess what because IT IS PUBLIC)
  • Waiting times as if there’s something for free…(you guessed it right… medical treatment)
  • Young, inexperienced doctors under heavy stress (you can tell, fresh from university)
  • Heavy bureaucracy and of course nobody speaks proper English
  • Chaos, organizational mistakes (to formulate it as a compliment)
  • Crowed public hospitals (sometimes not even a place to sit)

You name it! Don’t fade on a proper travel insurance and your ticket for proper treatment at a good hospital! It’s really the most important thing you need. This peace of mind is absolutely necessary. Always when I got sick and/or “forgot” or let it be canceled automatically at the end of the month, I regretted it heavily once I got sick.

Here are a few examples of mine, what happened in 10 years of travelling the world, in no special order:

  • Heavy food poisoning (several weeks), I caught in Mexico & Peru just to name a few
  • Famous pandemic virus in Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and who knows where else?
  • Tons of expensive drugs I had to pay myself without proper travel insurance…
  • Several times high fever without knowing the reason all around the world
  • Phone stolen several times in Mexico and Colombia (also new ones)
  • Got robbed and drugged in Colombia (Medellín)
  • Injuries from playing football in Mexico
  • Laptop stolen in Mexico
  • Scooter injuries in SEA
  • Dengue in Bali
  • List goes on…

Features travel insurance must have at a glance

See this post where I give you a more detailed overview of the best international travel insurances for small money.

Oh, I also do a small comparison there: SafetWing VS Heymondo.

By the way, both travel insurance provider include my must-have features and services:

My choice: SafetyWing Nomad Insurance

SafetyWing Nomad Insurance fulfills all the criteria above, that’s I think it’s one of the best travel insurance for the price you pay! If you break it down and choose the most expensive package with electronic theft and adventure sports coverage, you will pay monthly $76.28 (US), which will be just $2.54 per day (less than your Starbucks coffee).

SafetyWing also improved their claiming process, and it’s now much easier than before.

Especially when you’re about to travel to a country you haven’t been before, and you don’t speak the language, make sure to get it! Remember, you can cancel any time anyway! I will make it ease for you! Get a quote down below!

Important: Make sure to make proper photos of the bills and status quo of your electronic belongings before you travel!
