Working Holiday Visa Australia 2026/2027: What you need to know now!
Short answer: The biggest working holiday Australia 2026/2027 changes are a new ballot for second and third year visas (announced 17 September 2026, not law yet), a national minimum wage of AUD 26.44 per hour from 1 July 2026, higher visa fees (AUD 840 first year, AUD 1,000 second and third), and Payday Super, which started on 1 July 2026. The backpacker tax rate is still 15% up to AUD 45,000.
Last checked: 29 September 2026. Rules are moving, so re-check the Home Affairs site before you lodge anything.

Working Holiday Visa Australia: The New Second and Third Year Ballot (lottery)
On 17 September 2026, Tony Burke told the National Press Club that second and third year working holiday visas will be allocated by ballot (which is basically a lottery). Meeting the requirements will no longer guarantee a visa.
The numbers:
- Second year: capped at 45,000 places. About 57,000 people qualified last year.
- Third year: capped at 5,000 places. About 31,000 people qualified last year.
- First year: unchanged.
Yes, the third year just became a long shot. Plan accordingly.
What is confirmed and what is not law yet
Nothing in the ballot announcement is law yet. The ballot needs legislation or instruments that have not been registered, and there is no start date and no opening date for the ballot as of today.
What we know:
- The current rules apply until the new instruments commence.
- Applications already lodged are usually decided under the rules in place at lodgement.
- It is unclear whether people already in Australia will be treated the same way as future offshore applicants.
- UK passport holders are exempt from the specified work requirement. Reports differ on whether they also sit outside the ballot, so check the instrument when it appears.
I am not going to pretend to know the ballot mechanics. Nobody does yet.
Working Holiday Visa Extension: 88 Days and Regional Work Stay
The visa extension requirements do not change. You still need:
- 88 days of specified work for the second year
- Six months of specified work for the third year
- Work in an approved industry and regional work postcode
The ballot is an extra hurdle on top, not a replacement. Paid and volunteer disaster recovery work in declared disaster areas also counts toward specified work.
What to Do Now if You Want a Second or Third Year
Direct advice, no hedging:
- Keep every payslip, shift record and employer letter. Ballot or not, you need proof of each of the 88 days.
- If you already have your 88 days, lodge your visa extension application now. The current rules apply until the new ones commence.
- Do not build your whole plan around year two or three. Treat the first year as the guaranteed one and any extension as a bonus.
- Read the full step by step on the visa extension page. It covers 88 days, second year and regional work rules in detail.
- Have a plan B. Canada is the obvious one, so see working holiday Canada. Southeast Asia also works, see travelling SEA.
Working Holiday Visa Fees 2026/2027 and New Age Limits
Visa fees jumped on 1 July 2026. Most Australian visa charges rose about 25%, and the working holiday extensions rose more.
| Visa | Before 1 July 2026 | From 1 July 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| First working holiday visa (subclass 417 or 462) | AUD 670 | AUD 840 |
| Second or third working holiday visa | AUD 670 | AUD 1,000 |
The extension now costs AUD 160 more than your first visa. Fees are charged by lodgement date, so anything lodged on or after 1 July 2026 pays the new price.
New Age Rules for Working Holiday Visa Applicants
Two changes from 1 July 2026:
- You must meet the age requirement on the day you lodge your application.
- Passport holders from Cyprus, Finland, Germany and South Korea can now apply for the subclass 417 up to age 35.
Most countries already allowed 35. Nine still sit at 30: Belgium, Estonia, Hong Kong SAR, Japan, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Taiwan.
Not sure you qualify? Check the eligibility rules and the working holiday visa requirements before paying anything. Then follow the visa application walkthrough and set up your immi account.
Minimum Wage Australia 2026/2027: New Rates From 1 July 2026
The Fair Work Commission announced its decision on 2 June 2026. Award wages rise 4.75% from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2026.
The national minimum wage is now:
- AUD 26.44 per hour
- AUD 1,004.90 per week (38 hour week)
Two more numbers worth knowing:
- The lowest ongoing rate in any award must be at least AUD 1,004.90 per week.
- Entry-level rates during the first six months of employment must be at least AUD 978.10 per week (AUD 25.74 per hour).
Inflation was 3.5% in the year to July, so the raise mostly keeps you level. If you want the full picture on minimum wage rules and your TFN and ABN setup, read that guide first.
Casual Pay Rates for Backpacker Jobs in 2026/2027
Most awards add a 25% casual loading. At the national minimum, that puts the lowest casual rate around AUD 33.05 per hour.
A quick worked example at that rate, 38 hours a week:
- Gross pay: about AUD 1,256 per week
- Tax at 15%: about AUD 188
- Take-home: about AUD 1,067
- Employer super on top: about AUD 151
Your real rate depends on the award, the state and your job. Check current pay rates for casual jobs and the casual job breakdown by industry.
Under AUD 33 an hour as a casual? Ask questions. The Fair Work Ombudsman exists for a reason.
How to Find Backpacker Jobs Before the Ballot Decides Your Year
Jobs are still the point. The fastest routes:
- Read the guide on how to find backpacker jobs and the current backpacker jobs list.
- Try Sidekicker and other gigs for short shifts.
- Use a backpacker job board and treat your job hunt like a part-time job for the first week.
- Roles that come up constantly: kitchen hand, bartender, constructions labourer, event and cleaning work.
Working Holiday Tax 2026/2027: Backpacker Tax Rates and Your Tax Return
The backpacker tax did not change for 2026-27. The rates are:
| Taxable income | Rate |
|---|---|
| AUD 0 to 45,000 | 15% |
| AUD 45,001 to 135,000 | 30% |
| AUD 135,001 to 190,000 | 37% |
| AUD 190,001 and over | 45% |
There is no tax-free threshold for working holiday makers. You pay from the first dollar.
Two things to check on your first payslip:
- Your employer must be registered as a working holiday maker employer. If they are not, you can be taxed at 30% or more.
- Your TFN declaration must be filled in correctly.
At full-time hours on the lowest casual rate, you cross AUD 45,000 after roughly 36 weeks. After that, the rate doubles to 30%. Budget for it.
Tax Return Australia: Deadline and How to Lodge
The 2025-26 tax year ran from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026. If you worked in that period, the deadline to lodge a self-prepared tax return is 31 October 2026. Registered tax agents usually get a later date.
Most people leaving Australia want their taxes back, and the process is straightforward when your payslips are organised. Our guide to the tax return process shows how to lodge and how to claim taxes back. If you were paid a lump sums payment on departure, read that section twice.
Superannuation Australia 2026/2027: Payday Super and Getting Your Money Back
Payday Super started on 1 July 2026. Employers must now pay super with every pay run, not once a quarter.
What that means for you:
- The super guarantee rate stays at 12% (minium).
- Contributions must reach your fund within 7 business days of payday. The first contribution for a new employee has up to 20 business days.
- Casuals get super too, on ordinary time earnings including casual loading.
- Paying attention to your payslips is now easier, because super shows up much closer to the pay date.
Tip: set up your fund early and check that deposits actually land. Unpaid super is a real problem in Australia.
How to Claim Your Super When You Leave
When you leave Australia and your visa has ended, you can claim your super as a Departing Australia Superannuation Payment (DASP). For working holiday makers, the tax on that payment is 65%.
A rough example: AUD 4,800 in super contributions comes back as roughly AUD 1,680 before fund fees. It is not life-changing, but it is your money.
Step by step instructions are in how to get your Super in Australia.
Housing and Rent in Australia 2026/2027
Rent is still the biggest line in your budget, and it is still tight. All figures below are whole-dwelling medians, so you will usually pay a share, not the full number.
| City | Median weekly rent (June quarter 2026) | Vacancy rate (August 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Sydney | AUD 841 | 1.7% |
| Adelaide | AUD 662 | Under 1% |
| Melbourne | AUD 641 | 1.8% |
| National | AUD 705 | 1.3% |
Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide and Darwin all sit below 1% vacancy. Sydney and Canberra have loosened a little, with more vacant stock than a year ago.
The direct recommendation: book your first one or two weeks in a hostel, then find a room on the ground. Do not sign a lease from overseas.
Best Hostels and Where to Stay in Australia
I still recommend you to stay in hostels for at least the first two weeks! It’s the best to make new friends and get information you otherwise would never get! Don’t forget to compare prices and reviews on Hostelworld or Agoda. Then match the city to your plan:
- Best hostels in Sydney and where to stay in Sydney for first arrivals. Solo? Read the solo traveler picks.
- Best hostels in Melbourne for a cheaper big city base.
- Best hostels in Perth, best hostels in Brisbane and best Hostels in Cairns if you are heading west or north.

Cost of Living in Australia 2026/2027
Australia’s inflation rate was 3.5% in the 12 months to July 2026 (ABS release, 26 August 2026). The biggest movers were:
- Housing: up 5.0%
- Food and non-alcoholic beverages: up 3.2%
- Recreation and culture: up 2.6%
Rent and food are where your money goes. Cook, share a room, and get value for money from your job rather than chasing the highest hourly rate in the most expensive city.

Working Holiday Australia 2026/2027 Checklist: Insurance, Money and Arrival
Fees are higher and visas are tighter, so avoid wasting money on the boring stuff.
- Travel insurance: get proper cover before you fly. Read our pick of the best travel insurance for backpackers, focused on value for money.
- Banking: open a wise account and compare currency exchange costs before you move money.
- Phone: sort an e-sim so you land online.
- Flights: some airlines ask for proof of onward travel at check-in. An onward ticket covers that without buying a full fare (not required if you have a working holiday visa though, its more if you decide to start your trip in SEA).
- Admin: your first week matters. Follow first days in Australia and the first week in Australia checklist. Also read the insider tips Australia backpackers use.

Working Holiday Australia 2026/2027 FAQ
What is the new working holiday visa ballot for Australia?
It is a proposed ballot for second and third year working holiday visas, announced on 17 September 2026. Second year places are capped at 45,000 and third year places at 5,000. It is not law yet and has no confirmed start date.
What is the minimum wage in Australia in 2026/2027?
The national minimum wage is AUD 26.44 per hour (AUD 1,004.90 per week) from 1 July 2026. Most awards add a 25% casual loading, so the lowest casual rate is around AUD 33.05 per hour.
How much does a working holiday visa for Australia cost in 2026/2027?
AUD 840 for a first visa and AUD 1,000 for a second or third visa, for applications lodged on or after 1 July 2026.
Do I still need 88 days for a second year working holiday visa?
Yes. You still need 88 days of specified regional work for the second year and six months for the third. Under the announced changes, completing the work will get you into the ballot, not a guaranteed visa.
What is the backpacker tax rate in Australia in 2026/2027?
15% on income up to AUD 45,000, then 30% up to AUD 135,000, 37% up to AUD 190,000 and 45% above that. There is no tax-free threshold for working holiday makers.
What is Payday Super and does it affect backpackers?
Payday Super requires employers to pay super with every pay run from 1 July 2026, reaching your fund within 7 business days. The rate is still 12%, and it applies to casuals as well.
How much tax do I get back on my super when I leave Australia?
Working holiday makers pay 65% tax on a DASP super withdrawal. Claim it after you have left Australia and your visa has ended.
How much is rent in Australia in 2026?
The national median weekly rent was AUD 705 in the June quarter 2026, with Sydney at AUD 841 and Melbourne at AUD 641. These are whole-dwelling medians, so a room in a share house costs less.
When is the tax return deadline for working holiday makers?
31 October 2026 for self-lodged returns covering 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026. Use a registered tax agent if you need extra time.
Can UK citizens skip the specified work?
Yes. UK passport holders can get second and third year visas without the specified work requirement. Check the final ballot rules to see whether they are also outside the ballot.
